Texas Longhorns Bash
We left the hotel and headed down to Century City for the "offical" Longhorns Rose Bowl Party. We
got there just after 9:30pm and walked into the main ballroom right as the cheerleaders were finishing up
a UT cheer. Bill Engvall of Blue Collar Comedy Tour fame was even there, taking a moment on the stage
to cheer on the 'Horns. They ended the pep rally with the stadium cheer and a singing of the Eyes (see
videos below). We arrived at just the right time to hear both.
The place was totally packed. It was really unbelievable. However, after the pep rally ended, the place
really started to clear out, at least to a more comfortable level. There were two stages with bands playing,
with food and alcohol flowing (provided you purchased enough meal tickets!).
Jonn and I walked around the event, checking out all the people in attendance. In the main ballroom,
we encountered a guy wearing a very brightly colored sportscoat. On the coat was a patch, seemingly
from the Rose Bowl. Jonn began to converse with him about his outfit... finding out the whole story behind
them. The guy (and his friends) live in Pasadena but really wanted to attend the Rose Bowl. So way back
before the season began, they all purchased season tickets for UCLA games, which are played in the
Rose Bowl. Apparently, UCLA season ticket holders get priority tickets to the Rose Bowl. So they paid
$1200 for the season tickets just to watch the one game. Then they had these crazy jackets and patches
made up to commemorate their plan. They even got on TV when USC played UCLA in the last game of
the season. The final part of their plan is to throw two of the jackets to Lee Corso and
Kirk Herbstreit of the ESPN Gameday crew... that, and tailgate until they're all totally smashed.
Continuing to walk around the crowd, we were approached by a couple... the same people who earlier in the
day had pointed out how that USC woman was hiding a helmet in her purse! Out of the thousands of UT fans
there, they managed to pick us out. We were glad to see them, both to let them know what happened
and to thank them for the tip.
Later in the evening, we were walking through the crowd when another young man came up to me and
asked if we had been at the Big 12 Championship game... it was the same people who had sat right behind
us in Houston! They live in LA and travelled out for that game... and at the time said that we'd see them
at the Rose Bowl. Again, somehow they managed to pick us out of a crowd. We stood and talked for a while,
telling them all about our t-shirt story and this site. We still plan on seeing them at the tailgate
on gameday...
With the party dwindling down, we purchased some last minute souvenirs (including the bowl game program)
and headed back to the hotel for the night.
