After singing the Eyes (twice) and the trophy presentation, the Rose Bowl officials started clearing
out the stadium. I wanted to stay there forever. We made our way to the outer ring of the bowl and
walked around to the front. We encounted a handful of people who had somehow obtained USC-Championship
t-shirts. We wanted some SO badly but the people selling them ran out too quickly.
We walked down to the famous Rose Bowl sign and took a few pictures, all the while taking in the
continuing craziness and insanity of the moment. On our way out of the bowl, we passed the line
for the shuttle back to the subway. And as luck would have it, we once again ran into the
couple that helped us foil the
former Miami athletic director and his date from
stealing our helmets. We started to make our way out of the area when we
stumbled upon the UT Football truck. As we walked up, we spotted Deloss Dodds, UT Athletic Director,
duct-taping the number 4 over the "3" in "3 Time National Champions". After taking a few pictures,
we ran up to Deloss to try and find out the name of the Miami athletic director who tried to steal
our helmets from the Kickoff Luncheon. As we stood and talked with him briefly,
Darryl Royal was being interviewed behind him. It was a pretty cool moment. We did manage to get
the first name of the athletic director and with some quick Google searching, found out that
his name is Sam Jankovich
and is a member of the University of Miami Sports Hall of Fame.
Also on our way out of the stadium, we were stopped as the USC football team buses were escorted out
of the Rose Bowl. We could just feel the lack of energy around them... I hope they were all looking
at us decked out in burnt orange smiling back at them.
We hiked our way back to the subway station and caught the train back to the hotel. Again, the train
was full of Texas fans... all talking with each other and enjoying the moment. We finally got back
to the hotel and I was out almost as quickly as my head hit the pillow.
